Easter Eggs

Easter Eggs
Description

Origins and Curiosities

Since olden times, eggs have always been considered very important. They were held to be the symbol of life and fertility and the Romans said "Omne vivum ex ovo" (all living things come from an egg) just to confirm this theory.

Christians attributed a special meaning to such eggs: Eggs were not only the symbol of life but represent the rebirth of life after death. Nowadays the memory of the original meaning of the egg is lost and which actually represents great friendship and love.

It is narrated that the first Easter Egg was given as a gift to Francis the First of France during the first few years of the 16th Century and this is probably the reason why a gift is put inside the Easter Egg made of chocolate.

It was however in the Russia of the Zars that precious, decorated eggs became Easter gifts and Peter Carl Faubergé was the goldsmith who, through the use of his great imagination and genius left his mark on the history of decorated Easter Eggs.
