Xmas 2010

Sounds, sights and fragrances

The bagpipes come wordlessly

 from distant mountains

and awake the good poor people

 in their homes.

Right from the toe of Italy with its warm climate and exuberant peoples, up and up through a milder climate along the seats of the ancient Etruscans and the Roman Empire, you then reach the busy manufacturing towns in the north with the snow-capped Alps looking down from the horizon. Something is in the air, something is going to happen! You can almost hear sleigh bells ringing, metaphorically speaking, because here there are the Zampognari. All of a sudden the sound of the Zampogne or Bagpipes rise from the streets below and then you know Christmas is around the corner.
